Fair Cake in the news

This weeks Look Magazine has an article about people who have turned their hobby into their living and includes Shikhita Singh who gave up her job in fund management to set up Fair Cake, recent winners of Londonist's cupcake throwdown.

The article also includes a few tips for anyone hoping to "get paid to make cake" including details of course run by Cakes 4 Fun on "starting your own cake business from home" which I may look into. I have been thinking for a while of trying to supplement my income with cupcakes but I'm not sure if there is any room in the market for another cupcake'r.

Shikhita is definitely proof that people can make a living doing something they love!

Cupcake Throwdown winner announced...

it was Fair Cake! You can read all about the cupcakes, and the eating (and rather too much wastage of cupcakes for my liking by the looks of some of the photos), here. My faves, taking part, didn't even make any of the top 3 listings except for Bea's and Crumbs and Doilies (no Outsider Tart or Buttercup...pah) making me have a horrific moment where I thought that maybe I don't know my cupcakes very well at all! But that moment passed, thankfully, and I realised that maybe I have different taste when it comes to cupcakes- there seemed to have been a lot of complaints about "too much frosting" which kinda makes a cupcake a cupcake in my opinion...if you don't like frosting maybe try a bun instead?

You can read about when we tried Fair Cake's cupcakes (on snow day) here

Thanks to Londonist for the pic of the winner.

London cupcake throwdown

Londonist have invited London cupcake bakers to take part in a Cupcake Throwdown

Cupcakes. In just a few years, Londoners went from having scarce few bakeries from which to purchase these little treats to hardly being able to walk down the street without catching a glimpse at all manner of food porn baked goods in the window of some tawdry storefront.

Well, we've decided to see which of London’s cupcake peddlers can hold their own in a Cupcake Throwdown! The competition is to happen on the 29th of May, when a crack team of judges will let their oh so sophisticated palettes determine which cupcakes are the most moistest … most delicate … most delicious and satisfying in London.

So far these confident and generous bakeries have committed to submitting their cupcakes:

- Bea’s of Bloomsbury
- Buttercup Cake Shop
- Faircake
- Outsider Tart

Do you frequent, work at or own a London bakery that makes awesome cupcakes? Get in touch (Londonist@gmail.com) by May 23rd a let us know if you’d like to enter the competition.

I can't wait to see which cupcakes the Londonist team prefer!

Check out the cupcakes on that...

Yesterday I tried the fabulous Fair Cake's cupcakes and today whilst drooling over their Flickr site I found this stunning snow-woman with cupcakes...how cute!

I miss the snow all ready - the thaw is depressing! And I've just bought snowjoggers - ugly (although I kinda like them - they're so ugly they're cute perhaps?) but comfy and great in the snow!

Fair Cake cupcakes

I have wanted to try Fair Cake's cupcakes for some time and on this lovely snowy day I finally got to!!

Shakhita from Fair Cake had emailed me earlier this week to alert me that a new cafe in Greenwich, Biscuit, was selling her cakes at weekends. Unfortunately I couldn't make this weekend but as we had a "snow day" off work today we plodded through the snow to Greenwich Park (via the Deptford Project for coffee and cake for sustenance - I walked over 13 miles so needed it!) and on the way back noticed Biscuit was across the road - we ventured through the slush and wuhu there were cupcakes! I got a vanilla, Manny a chocolate and they were GREAT. Really moist, yummy and full of flavour - the frosting on both was melt in your mouth. My camera seems to have been affected by the cold weather (or my hands were shaking) so the pictures are pants I'm afraid - you can check out some official website pics here to see how great they usually look! This just means that I'll have to go back to get some more cupcakes to get some better pics - also next time they wont be squished in a snowy back-pack on the stomp home!

Also if you're artistic and fancy painting some crockery you can paint your own ceramic cupcake pot at Biscuit!

Finally, if you're in the area go visit the Deptford Project - its fab and the usually have cupcakes but didn't today due to the snow! Our coffees were great, as was our cake - especially Manny's chocolate one which was HUGE and v.yummy!

Scrumptious cakes,happy people

A reader of the blog suggested I check out Fair Cake, and Anna I want to thank you!

Fair Cake make some gorgeous looking cupcakes AND they use Fair Trade ingredients and only free range eggs, which only makes them yummier sounding!

I love their motto - scrumptious cakes, happy people as it sums up to me what cupcakes are all about! I'm told their cupcakes taste as good as the ones from New York, and from the look of their cakes, especially the rather yummy looking frosting I am inclined to agree!!!

Check out their blog for some lovely pictures of their cupcakes, with links to their Flickr site also!
