Making Whoopie in Brighton

After our trip to Swallow Bakery we had planned a stop in Worthing to visit the awesome Parklife but time was not on our side so we headed directly to Brighton as we were aiming to end our mini tour there with a trip to our favourite pub, with a stop at Angel Food Bakery first for a second bit of lunch (two cupcakes = lunch!).

Luck was on our side as we managed to secure a table in the usually v.busy Angel Food and Manny managed to get the last of their chocolate whoopie pies.

Manny's whoopie was HUGE and the filling was amazing - I tried a little smidge and it was ever so tasty. I opted for a banana cupcake which came with a white chocolate and cream cheese frosting. The cake was incredibly moist and tasty and the frosting was divine. I occasionally find cream cheese frosting a bit cloying but this combination was fantastic. I really like Angel Food Bakery, it's a lovely little cafe with fabulous coffee and even better cakes - everything is incredibly fresh, and you can see the kitchen staff preparing your cakes through the window at the back. And it seems I'm not the only one who loves it - the place was constantly busy, people popping in for a cupcake or to pick up or place orders. It's nice to see an small retailer doing so well!

Again we grabbed some take away - this time opting for four as we just couldn't decide and we needed some cake when we'd finished drinking! I had a toffee apple (with a Toffifee on top - one of my favourite sweets ever!), and a vanilla. Manny opted for a chocolate orange (with piece of chocolate orange on top) and a devils food with honeycomb on top of coffee frosting.

All of the cupcakes were lovely, except the vanilla which was unfortunately inedible and ended up in my bin. The frosting tasted of nothing but butter, not a hint of vanilla, and the cake itself tasted days old (we tried to eat it on the Saturday - about 16 hours after buying it), and again tasted of really flavourless sponge, again not a smidge of vanilla flavour. The other cupcakes made up for it though and were incredibly flavoursome - and really different from the usual cupcake flavours you get! I highly recommend a trip to Brighton for these cakes, especially the toffee apple which I adored and Manny recommends the whoopies and devils food cupcake!

We shall be doing the tour again, perhaps this time with less takeaway (I was stuffed of cake by the time my birthday was over!) and next time we're definitely going to Parklife - especially now they've started doing macarons!

Hallowen cupcakes in Brighton

Last year we went to Brighton for Halloween and ate some fab cupcakes from the Angel Food Bakery. This year we'd planned to go to Brighton (and Parklife in Worthing), however as we're going to Berlin in November we thought we'd best be a bit canny with money. However if you live nearby I highly recommend going to either as they're both offering Halloween cupcakes!

The pics above are from the Angel Food Bakery and the bottom one shows the Halloween devil cakes we got there last year.

Beware! GIANT cupcake in Covent Garden

My friend Kirsty just alerted me to this:

For those visiting on Thursday 16th July, Covent Garden's Real Food Market will see a massive cupcake arrive in its midst. Measuring 1.25m by 2m and designed by Culinary Olympic winner Michelle Wibowo, the giant cake is the worlds largest, feeding up to 2000 people.

Our advice? Be prepared. Take a spoon, a doggy bag and an empty stomach!

All I can say is WUHU!!! Oh and I'm quite excited to see what Michelle creates - I've seen her cakes before on Market Kitchen and they're fab!

I'm SO excited - the biggest cupcake I've seen so far (and resisted) was from Angel Food Bakery...this is going to be FAB!

Thanks to Angel Food Bakery for the pic of their huge cupcake!

Cupcake cuteness

The plan today was to visit Love Bakery, however I have a stonking hangover so have spent my day off faffing about online. I found this cute little purse from John Lewis and thought I'd share it...isn't it cute! It comes in pink and blue, but why anyone would choose blue over pink is beyond me!

I'm off to Brighton tomorrow so expect some Angel Food Bakery pics on Sunday :)

Battle of the GIANT cupcakes!

And it would seem that Angel Food Bakery in Brighton is going to win it!

Their website is finally up and running and their menu lists their giant cupcake (which we saw when we went to the bakery and I was VERY tempted!) at a very reasonable £16.95 which is a nearly a third of the price of Lola's Showgirl giant cupcake, which is the same size! That means I could go to Brighton on the train, buy Angel Food Bakery's giant cupcake and still have enough left for some small cupcakes, a cappuccino and a couple of pints of Kriek at the Evening Star! I feel a trip coming on!!

Check out Angel Food's website now - they really are worth the train journey!!! And if the giant cupcake tastes as good as their normal sized ones its a definite tastier alternative to the Christmas pud!

Oh and I love their "no fridge" logo - how cute!

Angel Food Bakery - part 2!

I couldn't fit all the pics I took in Angel Food Bakery into the last post as so thought I'd bundle them all together in a seperate post, including some more of their lovely Halloween cupcakes AND sighting of a GIANT cupcake ...the temptation to buy it was astounding I tell you!!! I especially regretted it when our train was delayed on the way home...that'd have taken my mind off the need to wee on a train with no toilet!!

Heaven sent cupcakes!!!!

I don't believe in angels but if I did they'd be working at Angel Food Bakery in Brighton sprinkling their fairy dust into the frosting I'd imagine!

After a recommendation from fellow cupcaker Consumed by Cake I'd been trying to get to Brighton for a few months now to check out Angel Food and finally made it on Halloween! And it was worth the wait!! We pretty much headed straight to the Bakery when we got there for a cupcake and a coffee as it was freezing (any excuse!!!). When we walked in it was quite busy, with people enjoying a cuppa and a cupcake AND with the smell of cupcakes baking!!! The place smelt GOOD!! I had a red velvet and Manny was persuaded that one was enough and had a chocolate cookie cupcake! My red velvet was up there in the top tasting and from the frenzy of scoffing next to me I know Manny enjoyed his! At this point I was a little disappointed as the only Halloween cupcakes were the display only however my frown was to be turned upside down later...

We resisted the temptation to scoff some more and had a good walk around Brighton for a few hours before heading back to get some cupcakes to take back to London! (You didn't really think we'd just have two cupcakes? Especially as this was our wedding anniversary - an excuse to eat cake if ever there was one!!!).

When we returned there was quite the queue (this place is popular!) and they'd replenished their stocks, including the Halloween cupcakes! Wuhu!! We got two devil cupcakes which were chocolate with cream cheese frosting (my memory has gone, I blame the cold drugs I'm taking!), a double chocolate for Manny and a vanilla for me! Excuse the pics of these being a bit squiffy but so were we after several drinks in the Evening Star before the last trian home! After a lot of Kriek nothing beats a yummy cupcake!

These were definitely some of the best cupcakes I've tried and if I lived closer I'd be a regular visitor! The batter on each cake was really moist and the frosting was to die for - I could've slapped the woman next to me who sat carefully removing her frosting before eating the cake...WHY?????!!!! With frosting this good its just sacrilege to waste it - especially in a place with such a heavenly name!!

Thanks Consumed by Cake for alerting me to this place! I'm definitely going to try and make it to the farmers market to try some of your cakes asap!
